After our fun in California we had to say good-bye to our 'Oregon' group. It was not easy...but the memories are captured in our hearts and cameras.
...and also captured are our hearts by this little girl...Lucy.
3 days later Britt and I headed to DC where she has begun her internship.
While in DC we got to have dinner with our good friend Jeanne Griffiths who we know from our years in China together. It is always such fun to reconnect with people who have touched your life.
The highlight for me of our touring in DC was the Library of Congress. It is amazing. It reminded me of all the pomp and circumstance we saw in Rome....and as I learned on our tour....it was meant to show the world that Americans, young as we are as a country, can have class....kind of a statement to the world that we were not just the wild wild west.
This is the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington cemetery which represents all those who have given their lives in war. The fascinating part for me is that this tomb is guarded 24/7 365 days a year. They have a changing of the guard every hour so that someone is watching over the tomb at all times. I love that symbolism and that feeling of honor.

This piece of art is at the Renwick Gallery. We discovered it 7 years ago quite by accident and I had to return for another look. It is a block of wood, sculpted to look like a grandfather clock covered by a thin white cloth. The cloth part (which is actually wood) was stained white to make it appear as though it is draped over a clock. It is called: Ghost Clock and is worth a view if you are ever in DC.
